Edinburgh Fringe Festival
The Fringe Festival story began in 1947, when the Edinburgh International Festival was launched. It was seen as a post-war initiative to re-unite Europe through culture, and was so successful that it inspired more performers than there was room for.
Well aware that there would be a good crowd and focused press interest, six Scottish companies and two English decided to turn up uninvited (acts are invited by the Festival Director to perform) to the Edinburgh international Festival and fend for themselves.
The Fringe Festival has now been taking place in Edinburgh for over 60 years and it's still young! It lives in the present, shifting and changing from year to year to accommodate all of the people who want to attend the Edinburgh Festival. Over the years, as the Edinburgh Fringe Organisation got bigger so did the programme. Companies began multiplying as quickly as worldwide interest in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival did and in 2007 the Fringe featured 31,000 performances of over 2,000 shows in 250 venues across Edinburgh. At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival theatre made up 31% of the programme followed closely by comedy with 30.5%, music was next with 17%, children’s 5.5%, musicals & opera totals 5%. Dance & Physical Theatre weighed in at 4.5%, exhibitions 3.5% and finally special events at 3%. Many of the shows featured in the Fringe Festival are unique and many have never been seen before in the UK.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a definite compliment to the inspiration of the Edinburgh International Festival and in 2008 the Fringe Festival hopes to grow bigger, attract more performers and build on the 1.6 million tickets sold in 2007.
